There is a popular belief that the best way to generate good ideas is to come with as many ideas as you can. As it turns out, this theory is not only sound but scientifically proven: studies from MIT and the University of California Davis show that groups of people who produce a large number of bad ideas will also produce more good ideas than the other groups do. The reality is, coming up with good ideas means that you will come up with lots of bad ones as well-and this includes the likes of accountants, chiropractors, entrepreneurs, musicians and writers.
Many of the best marketing strategies and ideas have come from just sitting down and throwing out ideas-good and bad. The trick is not to give up when you generate lots of bad ideas. Instead of just going with the first ideas you come up with, learn to differentiate between a good idea and a bad idea-but never let bad ideas put you off. The more ideas you come up with, the greater the chance you will come up with a really good one that could change everything.
