Generation Y - Age 18 to 34

I listened to a Success Magazine CD last week.  One of the interviews was with a young man who consulted with corporations on how to hire, train and retain Gen Y'ers.  They are becoming the largest portion of our work force so you need to think about how to have them be valuable employees.

The scary part is they often have the MOST contact with your customers.  I've heard some horror stories caused by lack of understanding.

Some advice from the interview:
man_2_pointing_down_custom.jpgGen Y'ers decide if they will stay with a company on their first day of work, often before lunch.  Never start your new Gen Y employee on a Monday. The Monday morning stress around your business may have 'em running!

Have someone of the same age and gender take them on the "company tour".  Gen Y'ers want to ask social questions, too and won't be comfortable asking their "mom, dad, grandma or grandpa" social questions.

Give Gen Y er's short bits of job performance feedback on a regular basis (weekly or bi-weekly).  Ten seconds of encouragement can make their week.

I'm adding a seminar to my customer service training series for employers who have Generation Y employees in contact with their older customers.  The "boomers" have the highest percentage of wealth in the country - don't let your Gen Y'ers offend them!
